Background of the Study
Social media memes have become a ubiquitous form of communication, influencing political consciousness in subtle yet profound ways. In Ikorodu Local Government, Lagos State, the proliferation of memes has introduced a new dimension to political discourse among students. Memes serve as vehicles for satire and criticism, allowing users to engage with political issues humorously and critically (Fashola, 2023). They encapsulate complex political ideologies into easily shareable visual formats that resonate with a digitally native audience. Recent research indicates that the viral nature of memes can lead to rapid dissemination of political ideas, simultaneously informing and shaping opinions (Ogunleye, 2024). However, concerns persist regarding the oversimplification of political issues and the potential for misinformation. As political consciousness evolves in the digital age, understanding the dual role of memes—as both educational and entertaining mediums—becomes essential. This study explores the nuanced impacts of social media memes on student political awareness, assessing both their benefits and limitations (Ajayi, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
While social media memes are popular among students, their role in fostering genuine political consciousness is underexplored. There is uncertainty about whether memes contribute to a deeper understanding of political issues or merely provide superficial entertainment. The potential for misinterpretation and misinformation poses challenges in assessing their true impact. Consequently, there is a pressing need to investigate how memes affect political attitudes and whether they stimulate informed political engagement among students in Ikorodu, Lagos State (Olatunji, 2024).

- To examine the mechanisms through which memes influence student political perceptions.

Research Questions:
- How do social media memes affect political consciousness among students?

Research Hypotheses:
- H₁: Social media memes significantly influence political consciousness among students in Ikorodu.
- H₂: The humorous nature of memes is positively associated with increased political engagement.
- H₃: There is a significant difference in political understanding between students who frequently share memes and those who do not.
Significance of the Study
This study is significant because it bridges the gap between digital culture and political education. Its findings may inform educators and digital media strategists on leveraging memes for enhancing political awareness, ensuring a balanced approach to entertainment and education (Adebisi, 2023).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to the effects of social media memes on political consciousness among students in Ikorodu Local Government, Lagos State, without examining other forms of digital content.
